A Really Green Lawn(Mower)

I've always wanted to have one of those old-fashioned reel-type mowers. Everyone would always tell me, "No, no. Those things aren't good. They don't work very well." So I never got one. That, and the fact that I've always had a man to mow my lawn! Anyhow, I no longer have a man, but I do have a lawn- a very big one. And two gas mowers and assorted weed wackers, in various states of operability. Instead of turning them all on and figuring out which are the keepers, I'm just going to let them gather dust and... get a reel mower. Yeah, baby!! Our lawn is going green.

After doing extensive research (okay, reading the reviews on homedepot.com and amazon.com), I've decided to get the Scotts 20 In. Green Classic Reel Mower. This baby retails at $139.00 at my local Home Depot. That plus tax brings it to $150.47. However... Amazon sells the same thing (brand new) for only $109.00. Plus, there's no tax and no shipping. They even give a $30.00 credit if you get an Amazon credit card. Can you imagine? The lawn mower of my dreams for only $79.00? Oh, yeah. Mama's got a new lawnmower!!

Mother-Daughter Outing #3

Something came up on Saturday and I unexpectedly got a free day. Since we still had four food/beverage tickets left over from the festival, A. & I just had to go back. (Drat the festival and their unbreakable strips of 10 tickets! They wouldn't sell in anything other than lots of 10.) So, in order to use those four tickets we had to buy more. Then we ended up having two left over on Saturday afternoon. Luckily a cute little girl passed us & A. ran up and gave her our last two tickets. Hopefully the girl's mom found the two-ticket ice cream cone stand. Otherwise they, too, might have gotten sucked into the never-ending food/beverage ticket cycle!

Anyhow, while we were there, we browsed the great art for sale and listened to some terrific music. The reggae/ska/rock bands were the best. After sitting on various curbs and browning a bit in the sun, we finally wised up and went to this little taco place right by the stage. Santiago's Taco Loco Express has a shaded rooftop patio were we watched the band. It was the perfect spot to enjoy the music while A. ate her long-awaited turkey leg and I had my bacon cheeseburger and fries. Yup, we're traditional girls.

Getting Henna-fied

Friday night, A. & I went to the Deep Ellum Arts Festival with some family friends. It was a beautiful night- nice and cool. While we were there A. and I got some mother-daughter henna tattoos. We'd been planning on getting some done. It was serendipitous that the henna artist I was interested in, Karen Weiss, was working the show. We're pretty pleased with the results and will surely be doing this again. :)

Child Abuse Prevention Month

Did you know that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month? There are so many children being abused in this country. It's a shame. Children should be raised with love, not with abuse. This month why don't you do something that can positively impact a child's life?

There are many volunteer opportunities out there. More than I know about, that's for sure! In the Dallas area, there are a few organizations that help abused children (yes, teens are chidren, too!). There are even opportunities that enable you to work one-on-one and mentor a young parent. This can strengthen and encourage the parenting skills that all parents should learn.
